2nd Annual Suicide Awareness & Prevention Walk

Dear Community Member:
On Saturday, July 11, 2009 several local agencies will be hosting the 2nd Annual Suicide
Awareness & Prevention Walk. Starting at 8:00 a.m. we will be walking 4 - 5 miles along
Grandview Avenue beginning and ending at Murphy Park.
In the United States, nearly 30,000 die and 750,000 people attempt suicide each year.
Suicide is a growing concern among people of all ages, especially with our veterans. There
are about 6,570 suicides per year, or about 18 suicides per day, among America’s 25 million
veterans.
Activities in addition to the walk include the Express Yourself! event that will feature
artwork and performances by area youth, children’s activities, informational booths, live
music and food and beverages for our participants.
Although this is not a fundraising event, we have many expenses to cover and we are asking
for any assistance that you can provide. We will gladly accept any gift-in-kind or monetary
donations to help support the success of this event in its second year.
Donations are tax deductible and should be directed to Community Foundation of Greater
Dubuque, c/o Suicide Walk, 700 Locust Street, Dubuque, IA 52001. Please indicate “Suicide
Walk” on the memo line of your check. All donors will be recognized and donations over
$100 will have their logo on the back of 300 free t-shirts given to the participants. Extra
proceeds, if any, will be directed towards the 3rd Annual Suicide Awareness & Prevention
Walk.
